Reasons for Having Laparoscopic Gallbladder Surgery
Patients that have laparoscopic gallbladder surgery have usually been diagnosed as having gallstones.
What Are Gallstones?
Gallstones are simply put, stones that form in the gall or bile. Bile is liquid made by the liver that is very important for digesting food. This bile makes it way from the liver into the gallbladder. Inside the gallbladder all of the water is removed from the bile. This leaves the gallbladder with “concentrated” bile. During a meal the walls of the gallbladder squeeze the concentrated bile through a duct (called the cystic duct) into the common duct. From the common duct the concentrated bile is sent to the intestine.
Gallstones prevent one or more of these processes from occurring. Gallstones can occur anywhere there’s bile. Gallstones can be located inside the gallbladder itself, making it difficult for the gallbladder to create the concentrated bile. This is the most common location for gallstones. Gallstones may also be located inside a duct, thus making it difficult to move bile through them.
