Gallstone Symptoms

The most common symptom of gallstones is abdominal pain during or shortly after eating a meal. The severity of the pain depends on the location, size, and number of gallstones. The pain usually occurs in one or more of the following areas:

  • the middle of the upper abdominal area, just beneath the sternum
  • the upper-right abdominal area, just beneath the ribs
  • the lower-right side of the back area

The pain is sometimes accompanied by nausea or vomiting.

The pain can last for 15 minutes up to 5 hours. The pain can be moderate to severe and patients usually report that moving around neither increases nor decreases the pain. With most patients, once the first gallstone episode occurs there are usually additional episodes; the pain may worsen with each episode. Individuals exhibiting these symptoms should see a doctor immediately to safeguard against inflammation or a serious infection.

Interestingly enough, the majority of patients with gallstones never know they have gallstones because the symptoms are non-existent. In these cases the gallstones are diagnosed as being “silent.”
