Gallstone Symptoms: The Mouth
Listed below are symptoms that may indicate the presence of gallstones or stones in the liver:
Frequent bad breath and burping. This is a sure indication that there’s undigested food and possibly fermented and putrefied food in the digestive tract. The bacteria that forms (as a result of this problem) produces gases which account for the bad breath and burping.
Cracked tongue. When the body makes insufficient amounts of bile food doesn’t digest as it should. This can in turn lead to bacterial putrefaction and/or toxicity which results in scars or lesions on the intestinal walls. Cracks on the tongue are an indication of this condition.
Frequent crust forming at corners of mouth. This could indicate the presence of duodenal ulcers caused by regurgitating bile into the stomach.
Pimples on the tongue. This could indicate digestive problems and fermenting food remains in the small or large intestines.
Yellow or white coating on the tongue. When bile is improperly produced it causes digestive problems within the body. This prevents toxins in the mouth and throat area from being flushed out of the body. As a result the back of the tongue becomes coated in bacteria.
Bile discharge into the mouth. If food isn’t digested properly the bile can sometimes backflow into the stomach, destroying the stomach’s protective lining and causing a discharge of mucus. The bile and mucus can also make its way up the throat and into the mouth. This leads to a very bitter taste in the mouth; frequents attempts to clear the mouth of bile lead to coughing and in some cases, minor choking.
Dark spots or marks on the lips. When an obstruction in the liver, kidneys, or gallbladder occur lymph drainage and blood circulation is negatively impacted. Seek medical attention if you have unusual dark spots on your lips.

Dear Sir/Madam:
I am shocked that in spite of the considerable wealth of knowledge on the internet today there has never been a site other than yours that has finally shed some light about the condition of my health !!!!!!!!
Since my last very serious gallstone attack that led to an infection, white stools and a brief period of jaundice I have been baffled for the last 5 months as to why:
(1) my tongue turned extremely white all the sudden
(2) my cough lasted this long but just now after 5 months it is slowly subsiding.
The ridiculous explanation of my above symptoms ranged from Candida to the beginning of Lung Cancer. You can image what goes through my mind when encountering these possible explanations where in both cases could become life threatening. This especially because I had an infection (fever) after my gallstone attack that could also have been fatal. The following week of this attack, I unexpectedly suffered with a major and very painful heartburn.
I never could imagine how the improper flow of Bile could have such an impact on my overall digestive system. Now everything makes so much sense about my current medical condition after reading your article entitled “GALLSTONES: THE MOUTH”.
As a result of your article I can now rest easier especially knowing that my cough does not appear to be related to Cancer of the lung. Just want to point out that I must have read over several hundreds articles on white tongue and Cancer and never found anything as consistent as your explanation of my symptoms.
Thank you so much for having help me diagnosed what appeared to be have been a potentially very serious illness of mine which I brought under control by totally changing my eating habits.
WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE ?
(1). Should I have my Gallbladder removed ?
(2). My tongue is slowly recovering to its normal color.
(3). I still cough about 4 times a day on the average.
(4). Been getting painful stomach cramps all attributed to very strong gas.
(5). Ultrasound revealed what appeared to be a 1.5cm Polyps at the entrance of my Gallbladder.
(6). Bile flow problem can result to what stool color (green, yellow or very light brown) ?
(7). Ultrasound found a 7mm spot on my liver. Is it because of my gallstone attack ?
(8). What should I consume to improve overall gallbladder health ? (Olive oil, beets ????)
Your answers to the above questions would greatly be appreciated as I now have so much confidence in your medical professionalism on gallbladder issues.
Previous white tongue explanation:
DENTIST —–> Normal in spite of my coughing and no red color whatsoever on the surface of my tongue !!!!
My Gastro surgeon —–> he thinks it is GERD (I don’t think that is possible !!!!)
Mike
Did you have a hidi scan?
I would ask for that.
Only way to tell what is going on is to see it in progress.
omg since csection 5
month ago ive had nasty strange flem in back of throat strange bile smells and some neck pain and always nausea could gall stones be my problem
Hi Mike,
I’m wondering if you ever received any answers to your questions. I have just returned home from hospital following an infection in my gallbladder, possibly caused by stone stuck in tubes.
I have today a red and sore tongue and gums and everything I eat and drink is tasting acidic. I have acid indigestion and coughing loads. Not so pleasantly, I am passing green slimy stools. That alongside the belching, I’m beginning to think I’m turning into a frog!!!
I shall be opting to have my gallbladder removed once this infection is completely cleared. Looking at the pros and cons I think this seems to best idea….under no circumstances do I want to go through the extreme pain of gallbladder infection again
hi,
i have been having gallbladder attacks a lot more. i have had this problem for two years and just found out that it is my gallbladder. i often get bad breath and bitterness in my mouth, i brush my teath 3 times a day but it does not help.when i have a attack it is real bad i get dry mouth a bitter taste and bad smell.
is this related to my galbladder??????
Tammy:
Hmmn, I don’t remember having a dry mouth during my gallbladder attacks however that was just my experience. Ask your doctor if this is related. Feel free to share what you find out.
Hi Mike,
your story of frustrated visits to doctors and false diagnosis rang bells with me.
I have had for some time now:
Frequent burping, a white or yellow coated tongue, sometimes pimples on the tongue, and problems with digesting food.
Treating with anacids or Omeprazole hasn’t helped greatly.
Gastroscopy showed “normal”.
What’s going on? Two facts from my medical history:
My gallbladder was successfully removed through laparoscopic surgery in 2004.
Further back in time they dignosed a 2.5cm haemangioma in my liver?
Can somebody please enlighten me, whether my yellow tongue might have anything to do with the liver or reflux of bile?
Thanks,
Anna
I made my first trip to the ER in July 2010 with CRUSHING pain under my right ribs, radiating all the way around to my back and right shoulder blade. I told them at the time I thought I was having a gallbladder attack since I’m the only one in my family that still has theirs. They decided to do CT scans to check for appendicitis or a kidney stone. Then came back and told me that due to wall thickening and inflammation around the hepatic flexure, they thought I had diverticulitis, gave me antibiotics Cipro and Flagyll, suggested I stay and referred me to a GI doc. I started getting the most awful taste in my mouth, which I asssumed was the medication. I tried a piece of pineapple which tasted like battery acid and even water tasted terrible.
Two weeks ago, it happened again. I ate a burger and fries, my stomach swelled massively, I had extreme gas pains and the pain under my ribs came back and a white cell count of 19,800. I should have listened to my instincts and called my doc the next morning, but the fear of having DV and a rupture in my colon sent me to the ER again. Worst experience ever! I ended up leaving AMA, called my doc at 10:30 PM, got into his office 2 days later. After teling him the symptoms… pain under my ribs, severe bloating, greenish-yellow watery stools, burping and nausea, he thinks it’s gallbladder also!! I have to wait for some inflammation to go down, and he has suggested an ultrasound and a HIDA test in a few weeks, along with a colonoscopy to see about DV. Last night, after sampling a small piece of meatloaf (I was starving, LOL)I awoke this morning with bad taste in mouth, pain under my ribs and shoulder, white coating on my tongue and an upset stomach again. So it seems that hamburger meat, at the very least is a trigger for me. I was told this can be simulated during a HIDA test, so we shall see, and I am praying for relief. I’m afraid to eat anything, for fear of getting sick. I suggest doing all the research you can, print things and take them along with you to the doc. The ER never even checked me for gallbladder problems, because once the CT scan picked up the wall thickening, they stopped there and never did any further testing. A CT scan cannot detect gallbladder problems! Good luck to everyone suffering from these symptoms. I hope you find a really good doc LIKE MINE who is willing to listen and is knowledgeable.
Penny:
Before I had my gallbladder removed it seemed as if almost anything I ate would trigger an attack. I’m glad your doctor was willing to take steps based on your input and symptoms. I was also fortunate to have a good doctor but it took me several days before I went to see him. I remember being away on a business trip, not being able to eat anything but the broth and noodles from some chicken noodle soup that I got from room service. I could barely move. So I definitely understand some of what you experienced. To this day I remember that pain.
Thanks for sharing your experience with everyone!
Dear Mike, never ever remove your gallbladder if you can help it. It is a very crucial organ. Rather treat the cause than removing the symtpoms…There is a wonderful book out there called “The Amazing Liver and Gallbladder Flush” by Andreas Moritz. Such a flush is already a “little surgery” in itself an helps to get rid of many gallstones and improves the function of the gallbladder and liver
I agree this site has some very amazing information, I for myself did not know that the cracks in the tongue are symptoms of low bile flow…
All the best to you
Vera

Thanks for sharing. If possible, or if time permits, people might want to research options and discuss them with their health care professionals.
