Gallbladder Surgery Recovery – Your Diet

There’s no specific long term gallbladder surgery diet you have to follow once you’ve had the surgery but you may want to curtail the intake of certain foods.

Here’s why:

It’s not uncommon to experience temporary digestive discomfort after gallbladder removal surgery. Most conditions can be linked to the absorption of fat. Certain fats and fat-soluble vitamins require bile in order to be absorbed by the body. The gall bladder stores bile from the liver; after a meal it contracts to release bile it into the intestine in order to absorb fat. After the gallbladder is removed, bile goes directly from the liver into the intestine but is released in a slow trickle. Therefore, if you eat a food high in fat your intestine may not have enough bile present to aid the absorption process.

This may lead to diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, and/or gas.

Remember, a few days after the surgery your body will need to adjust to the fact that you no longer have a gallbladder. The best rule of thumb is to take it easy after the surgery and limit your intake of rich foods or foods high in fat. You may want to limit intake of the following items:

  • Dairy products
  • Spicy foods
  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine

Most of the post-surgery symptoms are temporary and will diminish a few weeks after the surgery. However if they recur on a regular basis discuss the issue with your doctor.
