Gallbladder Surgery Recovery: Nausea and Vomiting

Some patients experience nausea and/or vomiting following gallbladder surgery. However symptoms may not be noticed initially during the recovery phase at the hospital. Instead, patients may experience nausea or vomiting once they begin moving around or getting up from the hospital bed.

It is very important that the patient notify the medical staff immediately if they experience nausea. As with most surgeries and abdominal surgeries in particular, the ability to take pain medications orally is very important. The medical staff can provide you with medication (administered via a needle injection or a suppository) to alleviate the nausea. Depending on the severity of the nausea your doctor may opt to prescribe additional anti-nausea medication for your use after you leave the hospital.

Just remember that experiencing slight nausea after gallbladder surgery is not uncommon but you should inform the medical staff once you experience symptoms. The medical staff is there to ensure your recovery is as comfortable as possible.

I ama 49 year old male had gall blafder surgery 7 days ago, was doing fine until the 6th day. I had Nausea and Vomiting problem and went to see my Dr. nurse and she said its not normal and to let them know if it keeps happening. I did ramp up exercising and eating the day I became ill but she discouted this. I am hoping I am right and I just over did it. I have no other problems since the surgery. Has anyone else experience this issue and what was the out come.

Thanks,
Patrick

When I had my gallbladder removed I had some slight nausea immediately after the surgery but they gave me some medicine for it and it passed by the next day.

It’s odd that you didn’t have any nausea until the 6th day. Did you eat something that was rich (creamy) or greasy? It takes your digestive system several weeks to adapt to the fact that you no longer have a gallbladder. Even today if I eat certain greasy foods (for me it’s foods like fried fish or Chinese food with MSG) I have abdominal pains and diarrhea.

If you continue to experience symptoms of nausea and vomiting you should probably see your physician.

Naomi:

You should probably see your doctor if you’re experiencing nausea 4 weeks after your surgery.

I hope you feel better soon.

I just had surgery for galblader removal and it went fine. I noticed I could not urinate, I suppose it was right after I woke up from the surgery. I went home, but had trouble completing my urine out, I stayed until I felt it was gone, then later I was back in the restroom again.

Day 2: The urined problem seems to be diminishing, I can go and finish almost sooner than the first day, with less prior urges. The problem it seems, I haven’t been able to potty since the day of the surgery. I have had only soups and jellos the fist day and 2nd day, soups, jellos and for dinner 2 pieces of chicken and jello, still nothing. I’m worried that something is not happening as it should. I feel fine, no symptoms of any kind.

Will look into Day 3 to see what is new.

Keep you all posted and I know we’re in it together, some different than others.

One good thing was that the pain I was expecting was very low in pain. All I remember when I went into the surgery room, I was like everyone else, nervous, looking around and then I don’t remember what happened after that until I woke up in the Recovery Room about 3 hours later. I had dizziness, but no naseau or hard pain at all. My friends whom had the surgery I did (Not Open), mentioned they experienced alot of pain. I suppose I had people praying for me and I believe that was one of the factors, you just have to believe.

Post tomorrow (Day 3).

Hello Again.

Day 3 (Actually 2 full days). I did pass some bowl movements. It was a bit, but I was surprised. I could actually feel the urge and I tried not to force it out, but I stayed until some of it came out. I will call the doctor and see what other foods I can now try to improve my bowel movements.

Well, that is certainly very good, but what about the other options we’ve got here? Would you mind writing a further article regarding these as well? Thanks a bunch!

I have been having gas and stomach bloating for quite a while. I went to the hospital and they did a complete CT scan of my abodomin and they said I had no blockages or tumors… they gace me a drip of benydrel and raggon… it seems to make me have a bowl movement and the swelling in my stomach went down,,, I have a low grade pain in my lower right side… just where the gall bladder is… I can only eat small amounts and get constipated very easily… only laxitives help me go… I have stayed away from fatty or spicy foods… it seems to help… I think my gall bladder is bad… other than taking it out. is there any treatment that will repair it,,, I heard about some kind of olive oil treatment ??? is this valid ? Please advise me… Thank you. Ed Domanico

I had my gallbladder removed on Dec. 28, 2010. Post surgery for about a week I had nausea and diarrhea. From then on I could eat just about anything. Then about a month from surgery, had a day of nausea after I ate breakfast, then it went away. Diarrhea (dumping of bile after eating) happens about every 2-3 days. Now from about April 1 to today, I get nauseous after eating almost every other day. I’ve read many places, could be normal and what they call Post-cholecystectomy syndrome (abbreviated as PCS). Trying a more holistic approach, but tired of getting nauseous and dealing with this. Especially since it looks like it devolped from food poisoning.

I am currently in the same position. How did you do after this and did anything help? I would really appreciate a response as I’m ready for things to get back to normal after dealing with all of this for almost a year now, and finally just having surgery a week ago today.
