Gallbladder Surgery Recovery: Minor Diarrhea

As stated in a previous article titled Gallbladder Surgery Recovery Times patients that have laparoscopic gallbladder surgery experience a shorter recovery time than those that have traditional surgery. This is primarily because of the method used to remove the gallbladder, i.e., 4 small incisions.

With many patients the side effects experienced after the surgery are minor. A common side effect is diarrhea. If, a few days after the surgery the patient eats:

-a large meal
-one containing lots of fat
-a rich meal (e.g., one with cream sauces, heavy desserts, etc.,)

they may experience diarrhea. The diarrhea may be such that it’s difficult to control. If this occurs the patient should contact his/her surgeon who can prescribe medicine to reduce the symptoms. Some surgeons automatically prescribe this medicine after the surgery just in case the patient has problems. The diarrhea usually goes away after a few days.

An over-the-counter item you may want to consider is:

Prilosec OTC Acid Reducer Delayed Release Tablets

These tablets help treat frequent heartburn that occurs 2 or more times weekly.  It make take 1-4 days for you to feel the full effect of the medication.  But the tablets are delayed release and stop acid production by shutting down the acid pump. A single pill can last up to 24 hours. Check Prilosec prices

I’ve had serious diarrhea issues since I had my gall bladder removed 2 years ago, loose, urgent and oily/yellow. I’ve even rushed from the table mid-meal. This was also causing more frequent UIT’s, as well. I’d had enough, did some research and just last week read on another forum about that someone had success taking a Calcium Citrate pill before each meal. Tired it – it worked immediately. After one whole week of being back to normal, I’m perfectly fine again. Relief!

I would really like to know more about this – have been suffering the same problem, with increasingly difficult diarrhea since the removal of my gall bladder 5 years ago. Am now at the point where I am afraid to eat anything, particularly if out of the house. Where can I buy calcium citrate pills, do they have another name? How do they work to stop the diarrhea? Many thanks, Karen

I had my gallbladder removed laparoscopic in January, and have had no lasting effects. I never had any diarrhea, nor any other post surgery complications. I had modified my diet before the surgery and eliminated fried foods, and I think this helped tremendously. I have read numerous stories about issues from this surgery, but for me it was a breeze. I think if you avoid the fatty foods it would help eliminate the diarrhea

Hi Melissa,
was your surgery necessary to a low functioning gall bladder? I have a very low emptying rate and no stones..,have been on a low fat diet for well over one month and have scheduled my surgery for next month. I was curious if you have the same issue asr and whether you suffered from chronic belching and occasional diarhea prior to your surgery. Glad to hear someone is having positive results. I am hopeful that there is a positive future for me and that maybe I can enjoy some of my favorite foods again without feeling so awful.
Thank you.
Jessica

I had surgery 1 month ago and have had very little problems until I returned to work. I have a desk job but at 2:00P.M.
my incisions start to ache, I get very tired and I bleed
internally. I don’t feel that I am overdoing. I don’t know
what could be the problem. Has anyone else had problems like
this?
